The Mysteries Of The Fundamental Physical Dimensions

Ali Sebetci The fundamental concepts of Newtonian physics are Time, Length, Mass, and Electric Charge by means of which all the other classical physical quantities such as velocity, force, momentum, energy, current, electric field, magnetic flux, etc. can be derived and expressed as their combinations. Classical physics stands on the assumption that material, having two basic intrinsic properties of mass and charge, and immaterial phenomena are all contained in an absolute space and an ever-flowing absolute time. These four physical dimensions, without asking the nature of them, provide a practical framework for a description of the gravitational and electromagnetic forces and thus a description of the physical world and an interpretation of the events occurring in it up to a certain degree. However, the Newtonian picture of the universe is neither adequate for a deeper understanding of the corporeal reality nor appropriate for linking that reality to the ones possessing higher d...

The Metaphysical Versus The Modern Senses Of The Idea Of Infinite

Ali Sebetci Although we often use them in-elaborately in our daily conversations, the idea of infinity and the notion of infinite are in fact tremendously deep and a sensitive account of the term requires much more attention and precision. Even in its modern mathematical sense, it causes many academic discussions, difficulties, and misunderstandings. Not only for the paradoxes of Zeno of Elea (about 490 BC-about 430 BC) and the Hilbert's (1862-1943) paradox of the grand hotel, but also for the philosophical and mathematical discussions on the Leibniz's (1646-1716) method of infinitesimal calculus, it is the underlying concept that has led so many controversies. Zeno of Elea was a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher of southern Italy and a member of the Eleatic School founded by Parmenides. He argued that an object in motion can never pass from one position to another, since between the two there is always an 'infinity' of other positions, however close, that must b...

The Islamic Conceptualization of the Sciences

Ali Sebetci We believe it is not emphasized today as much as it should be that traditional conceptualizations of sciences, whether Islamic or not, were very different from the way modern sciences are currently conceptualized. Most of us assume that humankind is continually improving in its knowledge of existence and thinking so as to understand reality as the ages pass. This may be true, especially when the detailed information of physical reality gathered and the level of technology reached with the help of the modern scientific method are considered. However, it is usually missed by modern minds that there is a crucial difference between the modern and traditional conceptualization of sciences which veils the significance of traditional sciences in the contemplation of the Absolute Reality. In this article, we would like to try to cast some light on this difference from the Islamic point of view, which is the last manifestation of all the traditional ones. Starting with t...
